Although the DS nameplate has long been out of production, Citroën will revive it when the new 2010 DS3 hatchback launches at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show.

Citroën first previewed a revival of the DS name at the 2009 Geneva motor show, where it unveiled the DS Inside concept. At the time, the French automaker indicated it would use the DS moniker as a sub-brand for premium, design-laden models.

The DS3, based largely off Citroën’s C3 compact, is the first example, aimed squarely at the likes of premium compacts like the Mini Cooper. While the car’s exterior is rather busy, certain styling cues, like the angled B-pillar and the contrasting ‘floating roof’, work well. We’ve yet to see a photo of the complete interior, but Citroen says buyers will be able to personalize the cabin with a seemingly endless array of trim finishes and seat fabrics.

Although it will likely be promoted as a “boutique” car, we’re curious how the DS3 will stack up against its C3 sibling, especially since the C3 uses the same engines, offers more space, and carries an upscale feel, thanks to a redesign earlier this year. We’ll find out when we see the both cars revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show starting on September 15.
