In America it’s a case of ‘the bigger, the better’ when it comes to pick-up trucks, so this Smart For-Us concept is sure to raise a few eyebrows when it debuts at the Detroit Motor Show next month.
Yes, this tiny concept car is an open-top pickup complete with a sturdy load bed that has an in-built docking station for two electric smart e-bikes and there’s a tail-gate that opens and retracts electronically.
Power for the car itself comes from the same all-electric set-up used in the Smart EV. It consists of an electric motor rated at 55 kW and 130 Nm of torque and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 17.6 kWh. In the For-Us Concept this zero-emission drivetrain will see the vehicle reach a top speed of 120 km/h.
While we don’t expect Smart to launch a pickup model anytime soon, we can envisage the For-Us Concept’s open-top design featuring on a sporty new roadster model. Following the success MINI has enjoyed with all its variants spun-off the basic Cooper hatchback design, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Smart follow the same route using its ForTwo as the basis.
