The all-new, third-generation, 2013 Porsche Boxster (981) has debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The new sports car is both lighter and more efficient than its predecessor, as well as being more powerful.
From a design perspective, the new roadster uses a completely revised lightweight chassis with a longer wheelbase, a wider track and larger wheels. The Boxster receives all-new exterior sheet metal with shorter overhangs, significantly forward-shifted windscreen, a flatter silhouette and edgier character lines.
Both the Boxster and Boxster S continue to use direct-injection flat-six engines, which are now 15 percent more efficient. The Porsche Boxster employs a smaller 2.7-litre boxer engine with 195 kW. Available with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK transmission, the standard Boxster accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds or 5.7 with PDK. Top speed is 264 km/h or 262 km/h with PDK. Porsche claim average fuel consumption of 7.7 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 180 g/km with the PDK ‘box.
The more powerful Boxster S uses a larger 3.4-litre engine with 232 kW. Acceleration from 0 – 100 km/h is 5.1 seconds, or 5.0 seconds when fitted with the optional PDK transmission. The Boxster S will reach a top speed of 279 km/h or 277 km/h with PDK. Average fuel consumption is a claimed 8.0 L/100km and 188 g/km with the PDK transmission.
Porsche offers the Sport Chrono Package as an optional extra for the Boxster, featuring dynamic transmission mounts for the first time. Also new in the Boxster is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear axle differential lock.
