The Porsche Cayenne is in its second generation and recently the 500 000th unit rolled off the production line in Leipzig, Germany. It’s a notable achievement, considering the first Cayenne went on sale just 10 years ago.
“Half a million vehicles in only ten years is a remarkable result for a luxury car manufacturer like Porsche,” said Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. To celebrate, Porsche donated the milestone vehicle (a red and white Cayenne S) to the Leipzig fire department as a ‘thank you’ for allowing the company to establish and run its production facility in the city since 2001.
According to Wolfgang Leimgruber, a member of the board for production and logistics at Porsche AG, Porsche plans to expand the Leipzig plant to accommodate the Macan crossover that is set to go into production in late 2013. The expansion will include the addition of its own body assembly line and a paint shop, effectively converting the Leipzig location from a production facility into a fully-fledged plant.
