Lexus joins the compact SUV fray
Lexus has revealed their first compact urban crossover vehicle, the Lexus UX, at the Geneva Motor Show this week.
The UX will introduce the new GA-C global architecture platform when it launches in South Africa early next year. The crossover will also debut Lexus’ fourth-gen hybrid system that features self-charging, higher efficiency and a new direct-shift CVT transmission.
The Lexus UX will sit below the medium-compact NX in the Lexus SUV product line. It will join the RX and LX SUV’s and is expected to be the most important model to be launched in South Africa since the NX back in 2015.
The signature Lexus spindle grille is accompanied by two slim LED headlights on either side. The menacing shoulders and sculpted bonnet can be seen clearly from the front-end of the UX. The rear features a single-bar rear light.
The aggressive design and muscular wheel arches make the UX a worthy rival to the likes of the upcoming Volvo XC40 and the Jaguar E-Pace, with all three compact SUV’s fighting to win over the hearts of younger buyers who are looking for a modern and luxurious take on a compact SUV.
Under the skin of the new UX lies the new C-segment platform, delivering the lowest centre of gravity in its class, improved body rigidity and agile, hatchback-like driving dynamics.
The interior of the Lexus UX places the focus on the driver with an abundance of cabin space, generous cargo capacity and a redesigned cockpit, complete with a Lexus LFA-style switchgear and digital dials with a commanding view over the road.
The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, that reaps the performance and fuel-economy benefits of high thermal efficiency, will be at the heart of both the UX 200 petrol variant and the UX 250h with its fourth-generation self-charging hybrid system.
