Land Rover recently unveiled its all-new Evoque model, but the compact crossover won’t be without peers for long. Mini is said to be readying a new model based on the firm’s Countryman model, which should give the Evoque a run for its money.
According to the latest reports out of the UK, Mini is currently developing a new premium three-door crossover model under the Canyon nameplate. The Canyon was first proposed in 2005, but was put on the backburner as the automaker focused on bringing the Countryman to production. However, with the premium CUV segment now gaining popularity, Mini will once again bring the Canyon to the forefront.
Based on a shortened version of the Countryman’s platform, the Canyon will slot above the Countryman in the Mini lineup. Adding to that premium position, the Canyon will come standard with Mini’s All4 four-wheel drive system, as well as the same 155 kW 1,6-litre engine found in the company’s JCW models. A 147 kW 2,0-litre diesel will also be offered in the European market.
Expect the Canyon to place form ahead of function, with a coupe-like roofline to attract style-conscious buyers. Inside, expect seating for four with plenty of leather and Alcantara.
Look for the Mini Canyon – although that name could change for production – to hit showrooms in 2012.
