Toyota FT-86 And Subaru BRZ Sports Coupes To Be Shown In Tokyo

It’s been a long time coming. Toyota and Subaru have announced that they’ll be showing their co-developed Toyota FT-86 and Subaru BRZ sports coupes at the Tokyo motor show next month. Finally.

Both models will be powered by a Subaru-derived flat-four engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. For the FT-86, Toyota has confirmed a total output of 147 kW, while output for the BRZ will be kept under 220 kW. Underneath, they’ll be identical, both getting limited-slip differentials and independent suspension. On the outside, they’ll be differentiated by grills, badges and wheels.

As for the Subaru version, a few things have also been confirmed: it won’t be turbocharged nor all-wheel-drive. A convertible version has also been denied.

Both cars sound promising and stand to liven up their respective model ranges and brand appeal when they’re launched mid-2012.
