BMW has been spotted once again testing a prototype of the next-generation BMW M3 sedan. This time the prototype was spotted testing on public streets.
The future M3 may still be heavily camouflaged, but we already know that it will feature a new design language leaning more towards aggressiveness and sportiness. The wider fenders stand out, as do the big air intakes in the front bumper. BMW have also added bigger brakes and quad exhaust pipes in typical M fashion.
Behind the wheels sits a high-performance cross-drilled braking package, while we can also expect vast revisions to the suspension components underneath, including geometry changes to caster and camber for optimum handling compared with the normal 3 Series.
As for the engine hardware, BMW M is doing a good job of keeping details under tight wraps. A prototype has been heard testing on the Nurburgring in western Germany, barking out a definitive six-cylinder engine note. A six-cylinder unit is said to be the choice for the next flagship 3 Series as BMW keeps on top of ever-tightening emissions laws, but at present four different engines are rumoured, including both V6 and V8 variations. Most interesting of which is the tri-turbo theory. BMW recently filed a new patent for electric-powered turbocharger technology, which suggests the future M3 will be powered by a fresh 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine equipped with three turbos – one powered by electricity, rather than the exhaust gases. This new engine could deliver up to 335 kW.
