Jaguar fans have had their hopes dashed on numerous occasions within the past 14 years, starting with the unfulfilled promise of the 1998 XK180 concept and then the 2000 F-Type. The XK180 morphed into the large XK grand tourer, while the F-Type went nowhere.
Now, once again, we hold our breath as the decision over whether the 2011 Jaguar C-X16 concept gets green lighted for production is set to be made in the near future. First shown at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the C-X16 would slot in beneath the XK, enabling Jaguar to fill the lower end of their catalogue, creating a new and more affordable option for would-be buyers.
An indication of Jag’s decision was given by global brand director, Adrian Hallmark, in an interview with Inside Line when he commented that “Jaguar without a sports car is like Porsche without a 911.”
If gievn the go-ahead, the new Jaguar sports car will be launched in 2014 or 2015, but not before a 3-Series rival and possibly a crossover join the lineup. Coupe and convertible body styles of the C-X16 inspired sports car could be expected in 2014 or 2015, followed by a rumoured ‘R’ version to take on the Porsche 911 Turbo.
