It’s a wonder why it has taken so long for a police force to commission a BMW M5 police car. Massive speed and power combined with plenty of interior space and comfort. Plus, if all else fails, just knowing that the local cops are driving an M5 is probably enough to send would-be car thieves running for the hills.
Still, although decked out in German “Polizei” livery, this is no work horse, but rather a concept that BMW unveiled at their museum in Welt, Germany. The BMW M5 police car concept was developed along side a number of genuine police vehicles, which will be making their respective debuts at this month’s 2012 General Police Equipment Exhibition & Conference in Leipzig, Germany.
At this stage BMW has not released any details of the M5 police concept, but we can’t help but wonder whether BMW have fettled beneath the bonnet to release a few more ponies, or at the very least, added the M Driver’s Package that increases the top speed from 250 km/h to 305 km/h. After all, Germany is the land of unrestricted autobahns, flooded with high-performance German saloons and their heavy-footed drivers.
As a refresher, the BMW M5 has a 4.4-litre, TwinPower Turbo V8, which produces 412 kW at 6 000 r/min, 680 Nm of torque from 1 500 r/min and is capable of a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds. (Take a read of editor Scott Hayes‘ first impressions from the launch at Aldo Scribante racetrack in Port Elizabeth.)
So, if any German criminals should grab the attention of the Polizei in a BMW 5 Series, we suggest they double check that it’s not just a garden variety 520d with an M Sport package, otherwise it’s game over.
