Volkswagen has maintained its position as the top dog in South Africa’s passenger car market having recorded its best monthly vehicles sales in 2012 this August. Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) reported a total sales of 9 135 units. Most significantly it’s their highest monthly sales in 2012 and their highest ever sales in August since the boom year of 2007.

The record monthly figure for 2012 came about thanks to Polo Vivo selling 3 714 units and achieving its best ever monthly sales since its launch in March 2010. Polo Vivo was also the best-selling model in the total new vehicle market and the Polo was the second best-selling model in the new passenger car market with 2 355 units.

Overall sales figures for the South African passenger car market in August came to 40 345 units, reflecting a 6.6% increase over July 2012 and a 12.5% increase over the same period last year. An average of 1 566 new cars were sold per day during August, numbers that were last seen at the new car market’s sales peak in 2006.

Mike Glendinning, Director of Sales and Marketing for VWSA said, “With interest rates at the lowest level in thirty eight years, debt servicing costs for households are low and sufficient credit is available to service demand for new cars. New car prices are growing at less than 3% on an annual basis and in real terms, after adjustment for inflation. Replacement demand also continues to play a strongly supportive role for the new car market and the introduction of new models to the market continues to entice consumers.”
