All-New Audi A4 Allroad

Previously only sold in South Africa as an A6 Allroad in 2001, Audi SA has just announced the introduction of an all-new Audi A4 Allroad Quattro model to head up the A4 Avant range. The A4 Allroad order books are now open before it arrives on local shores in February next year.

Just like the previous A6 Allroad, the A4 cross-over Avant gets Allroad-specific styling in the form of a raised ride height, black fenders, 17-inch ‘off-road styled’ wheels, a full aluminium package and additional stainless steel under body protection. The height adjustable air-suspension of the previous model is no more, although the A4 Allroad does have its own unqiue suspension set-up and the Quattro all-wheel drive befitting an off-road capable vehicle. Audi’s ESP Off-Road Detection (ORD) system maximises traction on varying surfaces.

The A4 Allroad will offer 180 mm of ground clearance and has a luggage capacity ranging from 490- to 1 430-litres with a convenient electromechanical rear tailgate as an optional extra. The automatic engine stop/start system, Bluetooth phone connectivity, driver infotainment system and cruise control, are all standard on the new Allroad.

Unlike the last A6 Allroad that only came with a big, thirsty engine, this time around there is a choice of two four-cylinder units: the 2.0 TDI or 2.0T FSI. The 2.0 TDI Quattro generates 130 kW and 380 Nm of torque while consuming just 6.0 L/100 km. The 2.0T FSI Quattro produces 155 kW and 350 Nm of torque while consuming 7.3 L/100 km. The S-Tronic transmission is standard across both models.

What do we think? Is the A4 allroad a worthwhile halo model for the lifestyle conscious Audi buyer? Or is it just a bit of spit and polish to give the A4 some more szhoosh?
