Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Launches In Europe

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

Volkswagen in Europe has announced it’ll be introducing an R-Line trim level to the Tiguan SUV. The Tiguan is notable in South Africa for being the first product offered with Volkswagen’s TSI, ‘twin-charger’ engine technology. Since then it has consistently been Volkswagen’s fourth best-selling car, behind the Polo / Polo Vivo, Golf and Jetta.

Volkswagen says the R-Line model accounted for almost 20% of sales in the last-generation Tiguan in Europe. The R-Line for the facelifted Tiguan includes bi-xenon headlights, ‘Mallory’ 18-inch alloy wheels in Sterling Silver, black wheel arch extensions and body-coloured unique front and rear ‘R-Line’ design bumpers. Inside, there are two-tone front sport seats with the R-Line emblem, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and stainless steel pedals.

The Tiguan R-Line will be offered at a £680 premium over a standard Tiguan and there is no confirmation yet if it’ll be available in South Africa. Locally the Tiguan is offered in a range of petrol TSI engines: a 90 kW and 200 Nm version that creates 155 g/km of CO2 and uses 6.5 L/100km; or they’ll do you a 118 kW and 240 Nm version, which is good for 7.6 L/100km and 178 g/km of CO2.

Our pick is the cheap, economical, BlueMotion TDI, two-wheel drive, 2.0-litre TDI with 81 kW and 280 Nm. It consumes just 5.3 L/100km while emitting 139 g/km CO2, all for just R294 800. An R-Line trim level on that car would be absolutely stellar.
