The nomenclature, ‘RS4′, needs no introduction to an Audi petrol head. Neither do the three letters, ‘ABT’, that delineate the German Audi and Volkswagen mega tuners. When you combine the two, we’d like to hazard a guess you’re inline for a pretty radical motor car. Of course ABT haven’t actually worked on an Audi RS4 here, no, take a look again, it’s an Audi AS4 Avant. Don’t worry, we were left stumped too for a few moments.
ABT can give your standard, facelifted Audi A4 a bit of that awesome RS4 machismo. ABT’s Audi A4-based, AS4 brings you significant power upgrades and a new aerodynamic kit for both the sedan and Avant versions, at a fraction of the cost of an RS4.
Thanks to some clever fettling, the 3.0-litre TDI engine receives a power hike from 180 kW to 221 kW and 500 Nm to 570 Nm of torque. The 2.0-litre TDI is also available with a power boost up to 151 kW and 420 Nm of torque. ABT can tune the 1.8-litre TFSI petrol engine to raise its power 155 kW, while the larger 2.0-litre TFSI can be wrung-out to 199 kW should you so desire.
Just as important, however, are a series of aerodynamic components available for both sedan and wagon versions of the new Audi A4, which give it that pseudo-RS4 look. ABT offers new front spoilers, side skirts, fender inserts, a rear spoiler, rear skirts and the very cool four-pipe exhaust system. In addition, an ABT performance coil-over kit is also available, along with wheels sizes and designs up to 20-inch.
We are expecting the real Audi RS4 to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of next year and that of course will only be in Avant form. So if you long for the good old days of the previous generation Audi RS4 saloon, how about an ABT AS4 sedan? Unti lABt boost the V6 3.0T petrol engine, however, you’ll have to make do with the 3.0-litre TDI, which will still give you power, massive torque, good looks and economy, all in one unique package? So, any takers for a cut-price pseudo Audi RS4?
