News doing the rounds says Porsche CEO, Matthias Muller, has definitely confirmed an exciting new Porsche supercar project. Forget the Panamera, Cayenne, Macan and any other sensible sales-generating bollocks like that. Porsche are now going to be fighting where they always should have been, they are targeting the Ferrari 458 Italia with a car allegedly called the 961.
Speculation, and a lot of wishful thinking, dictates that the 961 supercar will slot above the 911 sports car range and below the latest £672 000, 918 hybrid supercar. It could even inherit the 4.6-litre V8 engine out of the 918, but possibly (and hopefully) without the expensive and complicated full-hybrid system. It should also inherit the lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque chassis.
If this petrol-head dream comes true, the 961 will be light and with as much as 425 kW within its mid-ship layout, thus ensuring it matches the benchmark Ferrari 458 Italia in power, lightness and dynamics. The Porsche 961 is estimated to cost in the region of £250 000 or R3.5-million at a direct currency conversion.
That sounds all very good and well, but one thing we’re not sure about is its looks. Although they are far from being signed off, the 961 will undoubtedly borrow a lot styling from its 918 big brother. We’ve seen how much leeway the sexy styling allows the Ferrari 458 Italia in comparison tests against the McLaren 12C. Styling counts Porsche. Make it so for the new 961.
