BMW has officially confirmed that production of this proper, pukka, little sports car has come to an end. No more, nadda, nyet, will be available to buy new. Not that they were easy to buy even when BMW were still producing them.
From the outset, everyone knew it was only going to be available in limited numbers but even BMW couldn’t have even imagined just what a highly sought-after machine it was to become. Production was pegged at 2 452 units right from the start. One year in and everything was sold out, including South Africa’s allocation of 71 units. The rarity has also meant that residual values for used editions with low km have gone sky-high.
The BMW 1M Coupe boasted a twin-turbo 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine generating 250 kW and 500 Nm and did the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in less than 5.0 seconds. With an affordable price tag the BMW 1M Coupe was seen as bargain compared with the more expensive and no more torquey BMW M3.
In the end, more than 300 1M Coupes landed on Australian shores. The UK market received an allocation of just 400 units and the final count in the U.S. was 740 units. Thanks for the memories BMW 1M Coupe. Enthusiasts looking for a relatively affordable compact BMW performance car will have to rely on the BMW M135i hot-hatch for now.
