The end of the year brings some time for self-reflection and a chance to take stock. Quite literally in the case of Citroën and what they’ve found is that they have way too many C6 sedans floating around, hence the decision to axe it from their product line-up. In another high-profile product axing, following on the news of the Volkswagen Eos and Fiat Punto (although this last one isn’t 100% confirmed) Citroën’s range-topping C6 sedan will be discontinued before the end of the year.
Introduced internationally back in 2005, the Citroën C6 was billed as an avant-garde alternative to German luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series. Equipped with an advanced, oil-filled, hydraulic suspension, the C6 was mostly praised for its exceptional ride-comfort, while also being criticised for its uninspiring interior, basic front-wheel drive layout and sedate range of engines.
Citroën sold 7 600 C6s in 2007, the car’s most successful year. Sales embarked on a free fall the following year and the automaker has reportedly received little more 500 orders for the car in 2012. Citroën has confirmed that it is not planning on replacing the C6, instead saying that the year-old DS5 will fly the Citroën flagship flag from now on. Sadly for Citroën and the French auto industry, when the last example of the Citroën C6 rolls off the assembly line, it will mark the first time in three decades that none of France’s three major automakers offer a luxury sedan. ‘Au Revoir’ Citroën C6.
