Saleen Returns with Ford Mustang 351

Saleen 351 Mustang

World famous Mustang-tuner Steve Saleen has announced his return to the tuning limelight by detailing a new Mustang-based model, the 351. In the tuning world that’s a bit like Nelson Mandela coming out of retirement to take over the reins of the country from JZ. Tuning jargon in Americana dictates that the 351 cubic inch, or 5.7-litre, engine in the Saleen Mustang also doubles as its erstwhile name.

More significantly, Steve Saleen is back at the helm of the marque for the first time since 2007, when the performance guru walked away from his 23 year old brand. The Saleen brand was sold to MJ Acquisitions, along with the rights to produce S-Line and Racecraft Ford Mustang models. Saleen himself went on to create other projects under another company name, SMS Supercars.

After the split, the remaining company refused to honour warranties for vehicles purchased before the company took control and Steve Saleen and SMS Supercars chose to step in to remedy the situation. Steve Saleen and SMS Supercars then successfully sued MJ Acquisitions to get the name back where it rightfully belongs. With all the legal wrangling behind him, Steve Saleen has decided to celebrate the return of his namesake with new details announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Saleen engineered 5.7-litre V8 engine will produce 520 kW and 887 Nm of torque, thanks to its pairing with a Saleen 296 supercharger kit. The Saleen 351 Mustang will utilise a ‘six on the floor’ manual transmission, upgraded clutch, 20-inch wheel and tyre combination, as well as the Saleen developed suspension with massive 15-inch brake rotors.

The 351 will feature a ram-air induction system, allowing cold air intake through its unique butterfly scoop design. Additional components are a carbon fibre front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser. “Everything about this project has been mindful of the goal to create the most potent Mustang on the market”, said Al Wagner, the vice president of Saleen’s engineering division.

In the 351 Mustang, Steve Saleen does appear to have marked his return to the tuning world with what sounds like the most potent Mustang of them all. There is just one quick question from us… is there any work being done on the rear suspension Steve?
