Jeep has decided to release official photography of the all-new 2013 Cherokee SUV after spy images made their way onto the web over the weekend. Most notable on the new Jeep Cherokee is the flamboyant, curvy front styling that appears to fly in the face of the typical no-compromise Jeep image.
While the Cherokee undoubtedly borrows styling cues from the larger Grand Cherokee, the new two-tier look to the iconic seven-slot grille and the aggressive, separated headlight design, puts one in mind of the Nissan Juke. Ugly or distinctive? You decide.
Adding to the new crossover styling is the tall belt-line, tapered roof and longer overhangs at both ends. The bonnet crease is now more prominent than before, as is the lower spoiler with chrome trim and the headlights that have gained the requisite LED treatment.
Jeep says the new Cherokee will show exemplary on-road driving dynamics and improved fuel economy by as much as 45%. The improved on-road driving dynamics can be attributed to new independent rear suspension being fitted to the mid-sized SUV for the first time.
Few other details have been released, although it is understood the new Cherokee rides on the same modular platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (and Dodge Dart in the U.S.), with production set to take place at Chrysler’s Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio.
The new Jeep Cherokee will mostly likely come with front-wheel drive as standard, although certain high-end models could be offered with four-wheel drive. Engine choices will include the Chrysler range of 4- and 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
The previous Jeep Cherokee small SUV was a strong seller in South Africa and we can expect the Jeep Cherokee to arrive in South Africa some time in the fourth quarter. Expect all the details at the Jeep Cherokee’s debut at the New York Auto Show in March.
