BMW X4 Concept Officially Revealed Ahead Of Shanghai Show

There isn’t a whole lot to know about these BMW X4 Concept images, aside from what you see. Sure, it’s an all-wheel drive MPV/Crossover/SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) that fits in between the BMW X3, X5 and the X6, but it still looks good doesn’t it? A lot of BMW designs have been a little lacklustre lately, but this piece of machinery just looks spot on.

The X4 Concept is notable in pictures for its sloping rear roofline, which is in stark contrast to the more workaday X3′s conventionality. Expect to see reduced wheel sizes and more modest detailing on the body kit when the full production model is unveiled, probably at the Frankfurt show in September.

The BMW Sports Activity Vehicle will join the X1/3/5/6 in sporting distinctive four-door coupé looks. It looks a bit like an X3 that is a bit longer and more elegant than before. Design-wise, the X4 looks very similar to the 3 Series F30 sedan up front, with a touch of upcoming 4 Series coupé in profile.

The X4 Concept measures 4 648 mm long, 1 915 mm wide and 1 622 mm high, all of which are close to the X3, with the same wheelbase, but a wider track. When it goes in to production for 2014 it will be built in the U.S. Engines will undoubtedly be sourced from the X3, but thanks to sleeker proportions, a sportier driving experience is almost certainly guaranteed.

Whether this translates from on-road prowess to off-road toughness is doubtful and debatable. Petrol and diesel 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engines, as well as 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engines will be the order of the day, with an active hybrid version a very real possibility too. Look out for this compact crossover high-rider to debut later this month at the Shanghai Auto Show. Speculation seems to suggest we could have this car on the roads within a year.
