The Volkswagen Scirocco has been spied testing in the United States with a heavily camouflaged front facia. This can only mean that the 3rd generation Scirocco is having a late mid-life crisis and is about to clean up its act in an effort to remain ‘with it’.
The changes aren’t expected to be dramatic, but are instead destined to bring the Scirocco up-to-date with the current face of Volkswagen. The changes are likely to include sharper lines within the front bumper and grille, as well as LED detailing within a keener headlight design.
Similarly, the interior should be given an update that introduces some of Volkswagen’s latest gadgets and finishes, which we’ve seen and experienced in the Golf. Examples include a new touch-screen infotainment system, revised instrument cluster and high gloss black finishes.
Beneath the surface, VW could also update the Scirocco’s hardware with the latest TSI engines. If so, the Scirocco would inherit the Golf’s 90 kW and 200 Nm 1.4-litre TSI petrol unit, or the 2.0-litre, 162 kW and 350 Nm unit from the latest Golf GTI.
In either case, the 2014 Volkswagen Scirocco would benefit from improved fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions, but with its roots in the old PQ45-platform these figures won’t be quite as low as those of the lighter and more efficient MQB-based Golf 7.
With these photos show that testing is still in progress, it is likely that we’ll see the new Volkswagen Scirocco at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next March.
