Audi is creating 1 000 limited edition cars across two sporting models to pedal as many cars as the company can to its most ardent four-ring loyalists. 500 of them are to celebrate the DTM (German Touring Cars) title which Audi won this 2013 season courtesy of Le Mans champion and endurance/touring car racer, Mike Rockenfeller, in an Audi A5 DTM.
The second batch of limited edition cars take form in 500 limited edition Audi TTS Competition cars to commemorate Audi selling more than 500 000 TTs over fifteen years since the TT launched back in 1998. Has it been that long for the Bauhaus-inspired sports coupe and roadster?
Following Audi’s final DTM victory in Zandvoort, Holland, 2013 marks Audi’s first ever DTM touring car series title. Priced at €1 900 (roughly R29 575) over a standard Audi A5, the Audi A5 Coupe DTM features DTM badges on the door-sill trims, fenders and side sills as well as Rockenfeller’s race number (19) and nickname (Roc).
These tiny details join 20-inch five-spoke wheels from the RS5, a fixed rear wing and aluminium-look wing mirrors like you get on an Audi S5 to make up the Audi A5 DTM. It’s available in three colours only: Misano Red, Daytona Gray and Glacier White, but four engine options are on offer: the 2.0 TDI, 3.0 TDI, 2.0 TFSI quattro and 3.0 TFSI quattro. Think of it as an Audi RS5 lookalike without the pulsing V8 engine or the price tag.
The cosmetic tweaks on the Audi TTS Competition aim to give the humble TTS the presence of the five-cylinder TFSI TT RS, with an identical aesthetic upgrade as the A5 DTM by providing a fixed rear spoiler and five-spoke wheels from the RS model above it.
The unique colour for the Audi TTS Competition is called ‘Imola Yellow’ with yellow stitching on the interior. Unlike the A5 DTM, the TTS Competition does benefit from added equipment like SatNav, Bluetooth, and Audi MMI. Under the skin the mild-tune 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder power remains.
The Audi TTS Competition retails for £2 815 (roughly R39 000) over a standard TTS although Audi say buyers will be saving over speccing a TTS to the same level. This will most likely be one of the last TTs before an all new Audi TT arrives in 2014/2015.
