In the compact sports coupe market, the rivalry between BMW and Porsche has been around for some years, but the proverbial heat was really turned up with the launch of the BMW 1M Coupe in 2011. Dropping a turbocharged 3.0-litre engine with 250 kW into the 1 Series, but as importantly the running gear from the BMW M3 E92, meant the BMW 1 Series became a righteous contender to not just the Porsche Cayman, but the top-dog Cayman R.
BMW and Porsche have both recently launched the latest generations of their two-door sports coupes. We don’t have full-blown ‘M’ or ‘R’ models with us just yet, but the M235i and Cayman don’t need to be the angriest pups in the litter to have a good go at each other out on the racetrack.
