Volkswagen Scirocco in South Africa 2015

The 2015 Volkswagen Scirocco was launched in South Africa recently. The rakish coupe alternative to the Golf has received revisions so slight that Volkswagen decided the occasion didn’t warrant much media hoopla.

That said the Volkswagen Scirocco is still a stylish number so revisions to front and rear lights, revised bumpers and brighter headlight technology result in a familiar but more purposeful look. All models except the 1.4 TSI receive new alloys.

Engines from 1.4-litre turbo through to 2.0-litre turbo remain unchanged, taking power from 118kW to 155kW through the front wheels. Pity that the Scirocco R settles for 188kW when Golf R is rated at 206kW. That might have something to do with the Scirocco’s front-wheel drive and electronic slip differential compared to the 4Motion Golf R.

Where the Volkswagen Scirocco showed its age was the interior. Fit and finish is on a more premium level with flush inserts and titanium runners (carbon in the R) result in a sophisticated look. A new steering wheel has been fitted and overall comfort improved by new seats and different material. Auxiliary instruments reading turbo pressure, and engine/oil temperature are located above the centre console and pay homage to the first generation model.
