News: Elon Musk introduces Tesla Powerwall
Elon Musk’s Powerwall will change how homes and small businesses operate. The Tesla Powerwall is expected to have a big impact in the automotive sector.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, made a big announcement last night by confirming that the Tesla Energy brand had designed a new line of batteries. Departing briefly from his automotive involvement, Tesla will provide energy storage for homes and small businesses. The batteries will be capable of storing solar energy and then discharge a steady flow of power during peak times.
Elon Musk summed up the problem with the current power situation. “The sun doesn’t shine at night. To increase the utility of solar arrays, there needs to be a way to store energy at night”, he said. “The issue with existing batteries is they suck.”
Tesla’s Powerwall is based on similar hardware to that of their existing automotive sector and allows home or business owners to connect to solar energy, or store energy from the grid to be used during power outages. The lithium-ion Tesla Powerwall system is expected to retail for $3000
If Elon Musk and Tesla Motors can regulate and master solar energy storage, they will be in a controlling position as electric cars grow in volume. It’s a shrewd move by one of the world’s foremost innovators.
