Lotus is in the process of building an open-top version of the Evora 400 as well as working on new versions of the Exige and Elise. This was confirmed by Lotus boss Jean-Marc Gales; “The next Exige and Elise will be faster and lighter. Cars will also be more practical for everyday use.”

The company, under new leadership, is optimistic that it will once again enter a profitable period as it currently looks on track to reach the target set of 3000 cars sold in 2015, thanks mainly to a wider dealer network.

The Lotus Evora 400 convertible is considered a crucial addition to the range, particularly in the North American market, where convertibles account for 50% of all sports cars sold, in this price range.

Simplicity is key to the roof’s design, which Lotus say will not result in a loss of structural rigidity. Two panels (each weighing less than five kilograms) can be unlatched and stored behind the front seats – just ahead of the 3.5-litre V6 engine.

“It’s a quicker build,” said Gales, “as the chassis is a tub, so there’s no impact with the roof off.”
