It was no doubt impressive when Max Verstappen drove a 2011 Red Bull Racing F1 car up and down the snow-covered Austrian Alps a few weeks ago. But it would seem that the little stunt landed both the driver and Red Bull Racing in some serious hot water.
Though the 17-year old Dutch sensation was allowed to drive the F1 racer on the marked slopes, he wasn’t allowed to drive it outside of the permitted areas out of concern that it could cause damage to the natural preserve of the area. Which they, apparently, did.
According to reports, Red Bull didn’t get the necessary approval to stage the event on the Alps and this little mishap is what’s causing the uproar from both the locals and authorities.
Though the stunt was staged in below 0 degree temperatures, Red Bull is definitely feeling the heat and could face up to $32 450 (R551 650) in fines. This may look like pocket change to the multi-billion dollar Austrian company, but it is not the type of publicity anyone wants. Let alone in your own country!
The new Formula One season is still over fifty days away, with the first round of testing set to be held on January 25 and 26. The season kicks off in Melbourne, Australia, on March 20th.
