Despite a bevy of new bakkies flooding the market, it’s still easy to be fond of Volkswagen’s suave Amarok. Ride quality is class leading, the exterior design is smooth and sophisticated and the engine, despite small, returns some of the best in-gear performance we’ve ever tested. Too bad the larger buying population can’t comprehend its compact displacement.
Volkswagen has just released sketches of the new 2017 Amarok, along with a dozen technical highlights. Dimensions for new Amarok have not changed; 5.25m long, 2.23m wide and a ,load area of 2.52sq metres but the sharper premium design stacks up handsomely against Hilux and Ranger and lends itself to being aerodynamic and manoeuvrable. Inside Volkswagen Amarok will receive an upgraded touchscreen similar to the unit fitted in Golf and Passat.
Volkswagen South Africa will be pushing hard on current rumours that the V6 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine could join the current 2.0-litre petrol and diesel variants.
VW SA believes they could sell a lot more Amaroks if they have access to the bigger engine which would rival Toyota’s 4.0-litre petrol and Ford’s 5-cylinder 3.2-litre.
