Safety and comfort rank high in new Chevrolet Captiva

Capturing the true essence of an SUV through design, the new Chevrolet Captiva has gotten it right by merging form with functionality. The result is a cutting edge SUV that looks the part, while sporting practical features.

Arriving at our offices, Chevrolet’s Captiva has redefined what we’ve come to expect from an SUV. Bulky, but stylish in its approach, the Captiva looks fresh in the flesh, strutting its new attire, completed by the family bowtie encapsulated in the centre of the new grille. The new 18-inch alloy wheels give the Chev strong road presence, while the integrated side steps add to the feel of luxury.

Moving inside, and you begin to realise just how far the Chevrolet Captiva has come. Premium in all aspects of its interior design, the new 2016 model has stepped up the game. The award winning MyLink infotainment system takes centre stage. Boasting a seven-inch touch screen, this second generation systems builds on the innovations of the previous system.

The newest addition, dubbed phone projection technology, a first in this segment, allows users to project some of their smart phone’s apps and functions on the car’s infotainment screen. Ensuring you constantly have access to all the right information, even when you’re on the go. Simplicity in its layout, the MyLink system is easy to navigate and even a technophobe will be able to find their way around with ease.

Looking after the day-to-day operations, the latest Chevrolet Captiva is equipped with keyless entry, dual zone climate control, rear park assist, hill descent control and power folding mirrors. Safety is not compromised thanks to Stability Control, Braking Assist, iso-fix and trailer stabilization which works by distributing weight through continuous damping.

“The Captiva’s 5-Star Euro NCAP rating, is testament to Chevrolet’s continuous efforts to always keep customers safe. As a family vehicle the Captiva offers high levels of safety for all seven passengers regardless of where they are sitting. The full set of safety features which include front, side and curtain airbags, means that everybody who steps into the vehicle is protected,” said Tim Hendon, Chevrolet Brand Manager.

The completely redesigned dashboard and instrument cluster usher in the superior quality found throughout the Captiva. From the leather steering wheel, to the cushy seating, including the third row of seats, means the Captiva doesn’t just look good, but is practical too.

Throw into the mix 477 litre boot, with enough space to swallow all your cargo, dual zone climate control and keyless entry, the Chevrolet Captiva puts your luxury and comfort first.

On the open, the 2016 Chevrolet Captiva is easy going. It seemingly floats along, powered by the capable 2.4-litre petrol engine, which produces 123kW at 5600 rpm, and has a torque output of 230Nm at 4600rpm. Our test mule was the six-speed manual derivative, and admittedly with today’s traffic situation, I would rather opt for the charming auto option.

Smooth throughout the rev range, Chev has pinned the fuel consumption figures at 8.8 litres/100km. Considering the size of the SUV, the petrol motor is economical. That said, our pick would be the diesel powertrain.  Better suited for urban living, this frugal oilbruner returns a claimed 7.8 litres/100km, while delivering good torque.

Thankfully the large petrol barge is no slouch. Dispatching the 0-100km/h in a respectable time of 10.5 seconds and capable of reaching a speed of 190km/h, the Captiva feels well balance and relaxed even at speed.

The long list of safety and standard features makes the Chevrolet Captiva a worthwhile option if you’re looking for a well proportioned SUV to tackle several roles. Loaded with personality, practicality and good looks, we were sad to see the Captiva leave.
