Video: We track test M4 DTM Champion Edition!

and it's every bit as good as it sounds

BMW South Africa have a unique way of making journalists feel special.  What sense does it make to let a bunch of hooligans loose on a race track in a car that’s already been sold? A car that can, and has already sold itself? A car like the M4 DTM?

These were the questions on my mind when the invite to drive a few BMW M cars was sent out, and the M4 DTM was at the top of that list. Among the other cars available to drive were a few M Performance models, BMW’s new 7 series super saloon (stay tuned for that story) and then lastly, the incredible M4 DTM Champion Edition.

Quite similar to the M4 GTS, we think this car could be BMW’s attempt at giving clients another chance at glory, just in case they missed the chance to scoop up the limited edition GTS.

The DTM doesn’t have adjustable front and rear spoilers like the GTS, the gold wheels were thankfully ditched in favour of the same wheels, just in black and, on the inside, it has slightly softer seats.

All of this aside, just like the GTS, DTM is a frighteningly capable car, and around the track, the 368kW engine was always ready to light up those Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres.

Against the standard M4 there just isn’t a comparison. The 3-way adjustable suspension is much stiffer, the tyres grip much more, and the noises, crackles and sounds audible inside and outside give M4 DTM much more appeal. This is NOT a special edition with some stickers, a chip and bigger wheels. This is a track-ready car.

With just 200 available worldwide and 15 sold out in SA, the M4 DTM is already a future classic. In honour of BMW’s 2016 DTM title, this car will long be remembered. And being one of those lucky enough to experience it, all I can say is: thank you BMW.
