Mazda has announced a number of upgrades and additions to their Mazda6 model line-up for the year. Revisions to the exterior styling, adjustments to the interior look and feel, mechanical enhancements and additional features ensure the Mazda6 remains on top of its game and meets demand for a mid- and a high-spec automatic option.
There remain two, 2.0-litre derivatives, both powered by a four cylinder SVT engine that produces 108 kW at 6 500 rpm, with 184 N.m produced at 4 000 rpm. Both feature a six-speed manual transmission. The 2.0 Original may be the entry model to the range but still comes equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, MP3 compatibility, dual front, side and curtain airbags as well as a number of other creature comforts. The 2.0 Active offers additional spec such as larger 17-inch alloy wheels, 6-CD shuttle, front fog lamps, power adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, rain sensing front wipers, as well as satellite radio controls on the steering wheel.
A larger 2,5-litre engine, available in the 2.5 Active A/T and 2.5 Individual A/T models, offers 125 kW at 6 000 rpm and 226 N.m of torque from 4 000 rpm. The previous 2.5 Dynamic model has been replaced by the 2.5 Active A/T, giving customers a more affordable automatic offering. The 2.5 Active features the same specification as the 2.0 Active. Also new to the range is the 2.5 Individual A/T, which was previously offered in manual guise only. As the flagship of the range the Individual is equipped with exciting features such as Bi-Xenon headlamps with auto on/off function and auto levelling; swivelling Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), Smart start and smart keyless entry system with a new engine start/stop button. A body-coloured rear spoiler, aluminium pedal set and 18-inch alloy wheels give the Individual a distinctly sporty character.
The 2010 Mazda6 has received a number of styling updates. Beginning at the front, the grille now features wing-shape mouldings extending sideways from the brand symbol. The fog lamp design has been overhauled with a new round type design that incorporates a revised bezel and a silver accent below each fog lamp lens. The bezels on the Individual derivatives have an all-round silver coating for heightened sophistication. The headlamps have been enhanced with additional touches of chrome while the Individual derivative has an Adaptive Front lighting system that swivels the headlamp on the same side as the turn direction (the right-hand headlamp on a rightward turn; the left-hand headlamp on a leftward turn) by up to 15°, illuminating the part of the road that the car is heading towards. The rear of the vehicle has been enhanced with newly designed combination lamps that include a chrome-plated, wing-shaped decoration. The Individual model has clear inner lenses, while the others incorporate red inner lenses. The side view has also been revised with the addition of newly designed 17- and 18-inch wheels.
The interior has also been updated. On the centre stack, the silver paint trim has been replaced with a smooth, glossy, piano-black coating; the piano black is also carried through to the audio panel, climate-control, shift-gate surround and coatings around the steering wheel. The Original and Active derivatives have a matt-finish silver coating along the dashboard, while the Individual derivative has a bright, hairline-finish silver coating for an element of sportiness and refinement. The meter design located on the centre display has been improved, with the odometer/trip meter characters being made larger. The outside-temperature indicator was moved from the meter cluster to the centre display, where it is easier for the driver and front passenger to see.
The 2010 Mazda6 also features revised suspension for enhanced stability during high-speed straight-line driving. Changes to the double-wishbone suspension in front and the multi-link rear suspension, have resulted in a gentler response at the beginning of steering operations and a stronger feeling of stability. For the 2010 models, Mazda engineers have also focused on suppressing cabin shake on coarse road surfaces in order to deliver an even smoother, better-damped ride no matter what the road conditions.
“Mazda’s commitment to building inspiring cars that are enjoyable to drive means we are constantly looking at ways to improve our products. The newly-upgraded Mazda6 is a dynamic and exciting offering that will continue to attract customers who are young at heart and ready to embrace the true spirit of Zoom-Zoom,” concludes Mashinini.
