If you’re in Cape Town this evening (Thursday 3 February), why not head down to Killarney racetrack where you’ll find motoring personalities – and legends in their own lifetime – Sarel van der Merwe, Roger McLeery, Denis Joubert and David Piper.
They’ll be on hand for the launch of a new book entitled “50 Golden Racing Years”. With over 400 pages and 1 000 illustrations, the book showcases the people and events that took place on the ‘new’ Killarney track from 1960 until the present time, it also goes back to the story of the first race in South Africa that was held in Green Point in 1903.
Then, in keeping with the historical theme, a magnificently restored Formula 1 Maserati 250F that was driven by Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn during the 1950’s, will be on loan from the Franschhoek Motor Museum and exhibited in the main hall. A similar 250F was used by Juan Manual Fangio while on his way to two of his F1 world titles.
The event gets under way at 19h00, admission is R20 and includes light snacks. It’s a chance to rub shoulders with some of SA’s motoring greats, as well as pickup a record of the Western Cape’s racing heritage and quite possibly an autographed copy too.
