Spy photographers have managed to catch the 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG undergoing testing near the Nürburgring.
Like the standard model, the new SLK55 will feature an SLS-inspired grille, front fender vents, and LED-infused headlights. However, the AMG variant will be distinguished by aggressive bumpers, revised side skirts, a four-tailpipe exhaust system and AMG wheels, which are backed up by a high performance braking system.
Unfortunately, it remains unclear what engine will power the new convertible, but in theory there are a number of V8 contenders. The 336 kW 6.3-litre V8 from the C63 AMG would be hugely entertaining but is unlikely as there’s never been a SLK63 AMG and Merc can’t have the little SLK whippersnapper cocking its leg on that of the bigger C63; the 285 kW 5.5-litre V8 currently found in E500 models is the most likely; while we can always hope for the 320 kW 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 from the CL500 BlueEfficiency, which makes a lot of sense for having the lowest emmisions and best fuel economy of the lot.
We should learn more in the coming months, so stay tuned.
