The slightly more affordable companion to Porsche’s all-new 911, the mid-engined Boxster, is drawing nearer to its Geneva Motor Show debut. As these revealing new spy photos show, it’s right on schedule.
While a few of the key elements remain covered – check out the paper printouts over the headlights and taillights – these are the clearest shots yet of the new Boxster’s styling. Beneath the headlight and taillight masking hides, reportedly, a new and less traditional look that moves away from the 911-inspired look of the 986 and 987 generations.
The new Boxster has grown in size, its wheelbase reportedly growing by 60 mm and overall length by 37 mm. Height has fallen by 10 mm however, and the front overhang has also been cut by 25 mm. Despite the larger overall size, weight is understood to have fallen by 15 kg to 1 320 kg, thanks largely to increased use of aluminium and other lightweight materials in the car’s construction.
Power is expected to be drawn from a 2.9-litre flat six engine if earlier reports prove to be correct. Under the rear hatch of the more powerful Boxster S will be a 3.4-litre flat six with around 235 kW and 360 Nm of torque. Come 2015 however, the flat-six engine will reportedly be replaced by a new twin-turbo 2.5 litre four-cylinder boxer engine, developing around 270 kW and 470 Nm of torque.
