Porsche Could Start To Rely On Turbocharging

Porsche’s only turbo engines are found in the 911 Turbo, the Cayenne Turbo, and the Panamera Turbo, but that all may change soon. Dutch news site De Telegraaf is reporting an anonymous Porsche engineer has told them turbos will eventually be applied to smaller engines in the model range, but not necessarily with the Turbo badge.

The engineer is quoted as as saying, “Turbos are purely for improving the performance and are still only used on the top models. But the combination between smaller engines and turbocharging is a very promising way to lower the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Because of these two factors we will be offering turbo engines in models below the top series in the future. A four-cylinder boxer engine with a turbo is conceivable. But as before, the name 911 Turbo will only be for the model with the highest level of performance used.”

The last time Porsche used a four-cylinder turbo was for the 968 which ended production in 1995. When questioned about a 911 Hybrid the Porsche engineer responded, “As of yet we have no hybrid version of the 911 planned purely because of the extra weight that the technology brings. But, never say never. The required technology is in-house, as seen with the hybrid versions of the Panamera and Cayenne, and the platform is suitable for the powertrain.”
