Spied: BMW 3 Series GT

BMW 3 Series GT

While the BMW 5 Series GT may not be a common sight on South African roads, it has sold in decent numbers in other markets. This has obviously been the sign for BMW to introduced a scaled down version in the form of the 3 Series GT.

Seen in these spy shots scantily clad in camouflage, the 3 Series GT is designed to fit between the practicality of a hatchback and an estate. It’s another micro niche that BMW are squeezing into an existing model range and exactly the kind of thing that some find irksome.

Nevertheless, from the spy shots it’s clear that the 3 Series GT differs to the current F30 sedan in a number of areas. The obviously taller roofline, a wider kidney grille and headlights that sit higher up the front fascia, make the 3 GT easily identifiable.

The split rear tailgate of the 5 Series GT is said to have been dropped in favour of a single-piece unit, which will offer easier access to the boot area, as well as improved rear headroom. In addition, the smaller GT will combine a set of slightly raised and sliding rear seats, which together with improved boot access, should make the 3 Series GT a bit more appealing than the larger 5.

In terms of engines, look to the current 3 Series range for the most likely answer, those being the 320i, 320d, 328i and maybe even the 335i.
