2013 Audi S3 Details And Images

2013 Audi S3

The last time we saw the Audi S3, it was testing under camouflage back in April. Now, following last week’s announcement of the A3 Sportback, the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer has released the first images and details of its flagship S3.

Powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, direct-injection turbocharged TFSI engine, the new Audi S3 delivers a hefty 220 kW and 380 Nm of torque. This represents a substantial jump in power from the old car’s 195 kW and 350 Nm. (In South Africa, the current S3 is detuned to 188 kW and 350 Nm, due to fuel an environmental concerns.) At the same time, the new engine is also 5 kg lighter than that of the outgoing model.

There are no points for guessing that power is delivered to the road via Quattro all-wheel drive. A choice of 6-speed manual or ‘S tronic’ dual-clutch transmissions is available, which help the S3 reach 100 km/h from a standing start in 5.4 and 5.1 seconds respectively. Fuel consumption for the new engine is also improved, falling to 6.9 L/100km with the auto and 7.0 L/100km with the manual, which compares favourably with the 8.3 and 8.5 L/100km figures of the outgoing S3.

With a curb weight of 1 395 kg, the new Audi S3 is 60 kg lighter than the outgoing version, while hot-hatch’s handling has been improved over the standard models with a 25 mm lower sport suspension. Audi says the S3’s handling is more precise than ever, thanks to a better axle load distribution with the front axle having shifted 52 mm forward. The new S3 is also fitted with larger brakes than the standard car, while electromagnetic damper control is an option.

The Audi A3 doesn’t look all that much sportier than the A3 Sportback S-Line. Embellishments include a ‘S’ single-frame grille; revised front bumper; LED daytime running lights; updated side skirts; aluminum-look mirror caps; quad tailpipes; roof spoiler; as well as a new rear bumper with diffuser. The S3 also features 18-inch wheels wrapped in 225/40 profile tyres.

The S3’s interior features a number of updates over the standard car. There are gray instrument dials with white needles, a boost pressure indicator, power-retractable on-board monitor, brushed aluminum pedals and footrest, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, sport seats, black roofliner and the S tronic’s shift paddles also features an aluminium-look finish. A seven-inch retractable screen facilitates all infotainment functions, including internet access via the Audi connect system and control of the Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The Audi S3 will make its public debut in Paris on September 27, with a South African launch expected during 2013.
