Big Plans For Porsche Macan

The Porsche Macan crossover’s projected sales of 45 000 units a year from 2013 onwards appears to have been increased to an even more ambitious target of 75 000 units. Porsche’s procurement boss, Uwe-Karsten Staedter, has reportedly told Porsche suppliers that they must be expected to deliver on a sales potential of 75 000 Macans a year by the end of 2013. That’s a two thirds increase on Porsche’s original sales predictions.

To put those figures into perspective, Porsche’s total sales in 2011, which was a record year for the brand, were 116 978 units. That means the Macan could end up representing around 50% or more of Porsche’s sales within just a few short years. Much like the Cayenne did when it was first introduced to the Porsche stable.

The Macan is based on Audi Q5 underpinnings, but with Porsche DNA engineered in of course. A range of highly efficient 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre petrol and diesels will be harnessed for the crossovers propulsion. The most powerful Macan is touted to make around 275 kW from a 6-cylinder TFSI engine.

If the sentiment is indeed this positive, it looks like the Macan alone will go a long way to pushing Porsche towards its 2018 sales target of the 200 000 units. The Porsche Macan should get its first public viewing at the Paris Motor Show later this month and production will start in Leipzig in the New Year. We can expect it in South Africa by late 2013.
