BMW will stop the delivery of all 2012 BMW (F10M) M5, and (F12M) M6 Coupe / Convertible models due to engine oil pump issues. Edward Makwana, Manager of Group Automotive Communications at BMW South Africa has told SA Car Fan that: “Only 37 cars have been affected locally, but none of these cars have been delivered to customers yet. We will carry out the repair work when all these cars arrive (in South Africa) and before they are delivered to customers. The repair will involve removing the oil pump and replacing it with the correctly manufactured unit.”
BMW has had to issue a recall in certain markets overseas, where some owners have already taken delivery of their vehicles. In most instances, like BMW South Africa, they’ve been able to halt the delivery of the vehicles in time to affect the necessary repairs. The models recalled overseas were produced between July 2012 and September 2012. BMW say the pump driveshaft could separate from the pump rotor. If this were to occur, the engine could experience a sudden loss of oil pressure, causing engine damage. The engine oil pump is replaced free of charge to those owners overseas.
In BMW’s release they recommend that owners of affected vehicles do not drive their vehicle until the fix is completed. “If the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of oil pressure, carefully pull over to the side of the road and shut off the engine.” We’re thankful our man, Richard Webb, didn’t suffer such maladies during his recent test drive of the new BMW M5.
