Former Head of Design at Lamborghini and Head of Advanced Design at Volkswagen, Luc Donckerwolke, has been appointed as Bentley’s new Design Director. The man he replaces at Bentley, Dirk van Braeckel, is moving to a new job within the Volkswagen Group.

Luc Donckerwolke has worked within the Volkswagen Group for 20 years, but the Belgian has also spent time with Peugeot, Audi, Skoda, and Seat, before assuming his new role at Bentley. Luc Donckerwolke began his career as an Audi exterior designer in 1992. He moved to Skoda in 1994 to lead exterior design before returning to Audi in 1996. In 1998 he joined Lamborghini as a design project manager and was appointed as Lamborghini’s Head of Design in 2003.

Many would rate his most iconic designs as those he penned for Lamboghini. Donckerwolke was responsible for the first two Lamborghini’s that ushered in the Audi owned era ten years ago, namely the Murcielago and Gallardo. Luc Donckerwolke’s skills clearly lie in trailblazing new designs for stagnating sectors within the Volkswagen Group and this move to Bentley would hint at a new expansion strategy for Bentley.

Volkswagen Group design boss Walter de Silva had this to say in a statement announcing Donckerwolke’s appointment: “Donckerwolke’s extensive experience makes him the ideal person to take forward Bentley’s future design language, at a time when the company has significant plans for new models.”
