Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, but are have labelled it a ‘concept’ for now. Still, what we see here is essentially the near-production version of the new Golf GTI that will make it onto the road in 2013.
The formula remains unchanged as far as styling goes. The Golf GTI ‘concept’ features a honeycomb mesh grille, traditional red garnish, darkened LED tail-lights, new bumpers and side skirts, as well as big new five-spoke wheels. The interior has been given the traditional GTI tartan upholstery, along with an all-black layout and red contrast stitching. The steering wheel is also a flat-bottomed item with a retro-inspired circular horn pad.
The most important news is that of the engine and the fact that it will be available in two different power outputs. The concept is powered by a further development of the EA888 series engine, which is to say, a 2.0-litre, turbocharged and direct-injection petrol engine. Both GTI versions are equipped with an engine stop/start system as standard and achieve 6.0 L/100 km and 140 g/km of CO2 when paired with the 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is available as an option for both power levels.
The Golf GTI Stage 1 is the standard GTI and produces 162 kW and 350 Nm. This gives the hot-hatch a 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 246 km/h. The Golf GTI Stage 2 is an available option for buyers who want slightly more performance. Power is increased to 169 kW while torque remains unchanged. The GTI Stage 2 has a top speed of 250 km/h and a 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds. The Stage 2 option also adds larger brakes with GTI badges on the callipers, as well as an electronically controlled differential lock.
