American Football is essentially a weird version of rugby that involves shoulder pads. Sure, it’s not as good as rugby, it goes on for hours and half the players watch from the side-lines while one player wins them the game, but the quarterback is essential to an American Football franchise.
The franchise relies upon him for results and, after winning Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday night and scooping the MVP (most valuable player) trophy in the Baltimore Ravens’ 34 – 31 win over the San Francisco 49ers, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was also awarded something rather special.
Not only was he awarded the Tiffany & Co.-commissioned, diamond encrusted Pete Rozelle Trophy, but the Baltimore star quarterback was also handed the keys to an all-new 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as an added bonus.
The NFL Super Bowl is a veritable car fest for American Football viewers with car commercials taking centre stage during the famous halftime commercial slots; slots that are recognised as being the most valuable TV airtime in the world. General Motors recognised this and took their publicity efforts one step further by awarding the MVP a brand new all-American 335 kW supercar for his game winning efforts in front of millions.
The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray going to Flacco is said to be worth somewhere between $50 000 and $60 000, but GM did not announce details during the official ceremony, which took place on Monday after the Super Bowl. Rick Flick of the New Orleans’ Banner Chevrolet dealership handed over the keys of the 335 kW (450 hp) sports car to Flacco.
Flacco will have to wait a few months before he receives his brand new Corvette, but the Stingray will likely be worth the wait. The Corvette boasts an all-new 6.2-litre V8 that allows it to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in a sub-four-second time. We bet our rugby players wish they could be awarded much the same after a big win.
