British Engine Maker Cosworth For Sale

Get your cheque book out because independent British engineering company, Cosworth, is for sale. Historically, Cosworth has been synonymous with two things over the years: Fast Fords and F1 Racing. The ferocious Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and the Ford Escort RS Cosworth being the most prominent of the breed. These days Cosworth may only supply engines to F1 also-rans HRT and Marrusia, but Cosworth also do a limited, but still very swift, line of engines for some bespoke road cars.

Ford Escort RS Cosworth

The engine you’ll find in the BAC Mono for instance is a Cosworth Ford Duratec 2.3-litre with 209 kW. Cosworth also do upgrades for the Range Rover product line through tuners, Kahn Design, as well as a few variations of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Ford Focus ST. Over the years Cosworth powered F1 cars have won 176 grand prix races.

Cosworth Range Rover

To satisfy their business reorganisation strategy, Cosworth has entered the aerospace and defence markets of late. It has contracts with British luxury marque Rolls-Royce and even provides an F1 engine that acts as a fuel pump for the rockets on the Bloodhound SSC land speed record car.

Recent reports have stated that Rolls Royce could be at the front of the queue to buy Cosworth, thanks to the engine maker’s links in the aerospace industry. Another potential buyer is GKN, a British aerospace company. Whatever may lie in store for Cosworth, it’s clear they will most likely not be returning to the F1 grid under the tightened FIA engine regulations. So long for now Cosworth, may your new owners at least keep that mean streak of ferocious road cars alive.
