Brace yourself for more new market exploration from Nissan. The Japanese automaker has just revealed its new Extrem concept car at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil, South America. Clearly no one told them they forgot the ‘e’ at the end of Extreme, but anyway, Nissan are calling their new creation an ‘urban compact sports coupe’.
We wondered how long it would take Nissan to trump the wackiness of its six-eyed Juke and the Extrem, which runs on a compact Micra platform, could very well be that car to spawn a production model. More importantly however, it will also act as a design cue for other Nissan products going forward. Under the bonnet you’ll also find the 73 kW turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine from the Micra.
“This is definitely a signal of intent that we want to build something like this. It pushes the boundaries in terms of styling, but we make concepts that can make production rather than messing around with styling exercises. In this case we said, OK, let’s make something exciting but feasible,“ Robert Bauer, Senior Design manager and Nissan Design America, said at the Extrem’s Sao Paulo unveiling.
Speaking of the design influences the Extrem might hold for future Nissan production models, Brauer said, “The floating C-pillar is something you’ll definitely see more of. While the strong character of the headlights and grille will definitely carry through to the rest of the range.”
Nissan pioneered the crossover vehicle with the brilliant Qashqai back in 2007 and in the spirit of modern automotive downsizing there could certainly be space in their model line-up below the Juke for something like the Extrem.
