McLaren F1 Sells for £3.5 Million

McLaren F1

Yes, you’ve heard the story about the magical McLaren F1 a million times before. Built by Gordon Murray, it has a central driving position, an engine bay lined with gold and when it was launched it captured the record for the fastest production car in the world.

Finding one to stand next to (like we did at the Franschhoek Motor Museum three years ago) is hard enough and finding one up for sale is next to impossible. That’s because only 106 examples were ever created during the car’s five-year production run. Of those, only 72 were built for the road and the rest were all racing cars. Now a McLaren F1 had just been sold for £3.5 million (approximately $5.5 million or R49 million). That’s the price that famous British supercar dealer, Tom Hartley, recently sold one at.

The car was a pristine example owned by 29 year old Tom Hartley Jnr, lucky sod. The new owner will get the BMW-built 6.1-litre V12 engine with 467 kW and the privilege of accelerating from 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 386 km/h. A speed which is still the fastest non-turbocharged top speed ever recorded by a production car. They will also join the exclusive McLaren F1 owners club, which includes the likes of Jay Leno and Rowan Atkinson.

If R49-million is a little rich for your bank balance, there are other cars up for sale on the Tom Hartley website: a Ferrari F40 with just 5 000 km on the clock as well as a 2007 Porsche Carrera GT with only 1000 km on the clock.
