Next Audi TT Will Get Lightweight GT3 Model

Audi Quattro Concept

Pictured here is the Audi Quattro Concept, but the man who develops Audi’s future models has said the next TT Coupe will target a 1 000 kg curb weight with a stripped-out, hardcore, ‘GT3’ model. We’ve heard it all before from Audi and quite where they take their sometimes dubious, new, model inspiration from, we couldn’t tell you, but this car smells like it might have a wiff of genius about it.

The most bizarre sounding Audi’s always have become the most memorable. Let’s also not forget Audi’s exhaustive racing experience with lightweight materials in the endurance racing at the 24 hours of Le Mans and DTM. Although, in fairness, Audi’s ultra-lightweight technology rarely makes it onto their everyday road cars, until now that is, we hope.

Wolfgang Durheimer, head of R&D at Audi’s, has confirmed that a composite-material version of the next generation TT Coupe is in development at Ingolstadt. Audi want the 1 000 kg curb weight to still be teamed with the assured traction of Audi’s signature, Quattro, all-wheel drive system, a roll cage for safety and rigidity, as well as the rollicking turbo, 5-cylinder engine from a TT RS. The TT GT3 will use carbon fibre, steel and aluminium in its construction to ensure the weight loss.

The TT RS is one of our very favourite Audi’s and to make a more focused version of it, that loses weight and sharpens up the all-wheel-drive handling, has got to be a worthwhile project. Audi management will decide in the next few weeks if this model will actually reach production. Do it, just do it.
