The latest Porsche sportscar has been unveiled just over a week after it was spotted wearing light camo in a warehouse in preparation for the L.A. Auto Show.
The 2013 Porsche Cayman is the German manufacturer’s latest sportscar and is lighter, lower, longer and more powerful than before. Following the styling of its Boxster sibling very closely, the hard-top of the new generation coupe is a sleeker design than before, which also brings it closer in styling to the larger 911. The Cayman is differentiated with a unique set of front fog lights, while an aluminum rear hatch features an integrated spoiler that extends higher and at a steeper angle of that fitted to the Boxster.
The interior is shared with the Boxster, which has been praised for its high quality materials and an elegant design, as long as you don’t mind a centre console lined with buttons. The luggage capacity of the new Cayman is said to have been increased by 15-litres to 425-liters and among many optional extras are Adaptive Cruise Control and a Burmester sound system.
As expected, the choice of engines is carried over from the Boxster, these being a either a 2.7-litre flat-six engine with 202 kW, or a 3.4-litre flat-six with 239 kW. The 2.7-litre Cayman has a top speed of 266 km/h, a 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds and average fuel consumption of between 7.7 and 8.2 L/100km depending on the choice of either a 7-speed PDK transmission or 6-speed manual. The 3.4-litre Cayman S has a top speed of 283 km/h a 0 – 100 km/h sprint of 5.0 seconds and average fuel consumption of between 8.0 and 8.8 L/100km depending on the manual or PDK ‘box. A Sport Chrono package drops the 0 – 100 km/h sprint times to 5.4 and 4.7 seconds on the Cayman and Cayman S respectively.
The new Porsche Cayman will go on sale in Europe in march 2013. Pricing and availability for South Africa will be announced closer to the car’s arrival next year.
