Say ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ To The Volkswagen Eos

Volkswagen Eos

To be honest, we’d forgotten about the Volkswagen Eos ever since it was deleted from the Volkswagen SA price list some time ago. Europeans received a facelift in 2010, which brought the car in-line with the styling of the Golf 6, but Volkswagen have now inevitably decided to pull the production plug on the ageing exhibitionist once and for all. We don’t mind this however, when you consider the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is arguably the best C-segment sized convertible in its class, offering a more compact and efficient soft-top roof.

Volkswagen’s head of design, Klaus Bischoff, has said in a recent report that the reason for the demise of the Eos (aside from its age – it’s been in production since 2007) is because retractable hardtops are no longer popular with consumers. Are you listening Renault, Peugeot and Citroen? The other, more practical reason why Volkswagen will drop the Eos is because all current plants are running at full capacity with cars that are selling in huge numbers.

Bischoff also went onto say that instead of replacing the Eos, Volkswagen will develop a larger soft-top, full-size, four-seater cabriolet. Translate that as Volkswagen want to make their own version of the Audi A5 Convertible. The Audi A5 should be the ideal base for Volkswagen’s next generation convertible, much like the Audi A3 was for the Golf Cabriolet, which will take open-air motoring into a new and upscale direction, while making use of the venerable Volkswagen Golf GTI’s drivetrain and technology.
