Just in time for your Christmas pressie list, Toyota has added an ‘entry-level’ automatic gearbox option to the all-conquering Toyota Fortuner line-up. The entry-level 2.5 D-4D engine has been available in the Fortuner for some time now as a straight-up manual, giving a more-affordable-than-ever price entry point for people wanting to hop into a Toyota Fortuner.

The Fortuner 2.5 D-4D VNT Auto delivers maximum performance and economy from its frugal 4-cylinder engine. Maximum power is 106 kW and you get 343 Nm of torque. The 4-speed auto is the same one used throughout the Toyota range. Maximum torque is available from 1 600 r/min and peak power is achieved at 3 400 r/min.

The old 2.5-litre Toyota diesel made a puny 75 kW and 260 Nm of torque by comparison. Toyota haven’t given us an idea of what type of fuel economy we can expect from this drivetrain pairing.

The Toyota Fortuner is one of those sales phenomenon’s in South Africa that must have many a worthy SUV adversary scratching their heads. Since its introduction in 2006 it has become the best-selling privately bought vehicle in the country, according to NAAMSA sales statistics.
