Lamborghini and German firm, Reiter Engineering, will join together again for another five year stint, producing GT3 FL2 racing Gallardos. This marks the first time Lamborghini will directly collaborate on developing a factory-backed GT racing car.
Reiter Engineering will deal directly with Lamborghini’s R&D motorsport department, Squadra Corse, in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Reiter Engineering has been running Lamborghini GT cars since the year 2000 and has secured almost 200 victories with well over 350 podium positions over the years.
Based on the latest 2013 version of the road-going Lamborghini Gallardo, the Reiter racing car will cost customers €320 000, or roughly R4-million. That may sound like a lot, but Lamborghini say the Gallardo GT3 is still one of the most cost-effective GT3 race cars, with only a €9/km to €12/km parts rebuild cost.
Reiter says the improvements on the new Gallardo GT3 FL2 are: 25 kg less weight; better brake performance; more efficient engine cooling and reduced fuel consumption. A new aerodynamics kit specifically designed for the facelifted 2013 Gallardo, consists of a new front splitter and a rear carbon diffuser, as you’d find on the Gallardo Blancpain Super Trofeo racing car.
Stephan Winkelmann, the President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini had this to say: “We are delighted to announce a minimum five-year agreement with Reiter Engineering as our exclusive development and supply partner for Lamborghini GT3 cars, based on Reiter’s strong engineering skills, passion for and understanding of the Lamborghini brand and, of course, obvious racing success. GT3 racing is where we take the prowess of our super sports cars from the road to the track.”
Race teams will receive their cars in March and will be illegible to use them in the Blancpain Endurance Series, Italian GT3 Championship in Europe and the Le Mans Series in Asia.
